New Disney studio movie Lone Ranger starring Johnny Depp suffers enourmous financial disaster as its box office is only $131m which is not impressive sum when compared to its $215m budget. Year before it was $250m budget John Carter movie seeing itself in similar situation. Does it seem like tendention or is it only temporary problem for Disney studio?
Problem is that now it seems that legendary studio which emerged in 1930's depression time is not what it was before. What was always the soul of Disney? Their animation and adventure movies. but first of all animation. And their last successful animation was Lion King. They do not make animated features anymore. All of their animated features are Pixar's. In last decade of 90's they missed the train called 3d animation. And all industry appeared to be battle of Pixar with DreamWorks. Than Disney just bought Pixar from Steve Jobs who appeared to be better artistic director than Disney leaders.
So Disney now seens to be just giant pile of money. Corporation. As any other like General Electric owning Universal. Yes they do tonns of kids television production. But their most successful project is Avengers. Marvel's comics movie.
Lone Ranger and John Careter both had enourmous budgets compared to such of Avatar. But why is it all when it is hard to expect the similar bounty? looks like it is another symptom of writing crisis. We have wide market, (which becomes only wide with help of expansion to developing markets) we have a lot of people and money involved, but not enough of good stories. That is why big studio with big money will have tendency to spend as much money as possible for one project. But they forget that it is not much easier to produce one $200m movie than two $100m each.
And now will be disney able to present something more original than Marvel comics movie that is a question for which only time will show the answer. Wait and see.
