Recent weeks two stories connected to losing self-identification has happened in deferent parts of world. And the very least they deserve to be subject if not for big feature then for documentary.
Athlete from Cuba Orlando Ortega was claimed to be missing in time of World Championships in Moscow. After some days he was found in Italy. And as it was said he is going to Florida, where he has his mother settled. At the same time american Michael Boatwright was founf in Florida in state of amnesia. Michael claims himself to be swedish and speaks only swedish language. Now it is evident that Orlando will need to find his new identification as he will be not able to compete for Cuba anymore. And Boatwright who suddenly decided to go to Sweden to find the pieces of his devided self is now in search of his old one. Or is he? Docs regarding this case would say that he forgot something which can cause pain for him. It is defensive mechanism. His brain erased part of his memory not to feel pain. The same way you may erase song from your music player. Remember Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind? That is it. Partial destruction of self-identity which is better then suicide. And now he went to Sweden, because probably he spend there some good time and now he needs good emotions.
These cases are good for movie plots because they do not give certain answes when asking eternal questions. Will they want their past identity back? What is importance of your past? And can you run away from it?
Cases of lost identity where regarded in many Hollywood movies before. In big ones like Bourne series or in films like philosophical Memento by Nolan brothers. Theme of self identification will be ever important for human beings. And that is way until film is art it will occupy problems of identity.
