Tarkovsky's Lessons: About the Beautiful.

One of the most interesting quotes of Andrei Tarkovsky is devoted to beauty. And there is no surprise as philosophy of the beautiful plays primal role in his system of values.

In one of his interviews Tarkovsky states that 'Beauty is the symbol of the true'.

Никто не знает, что такое красота. Мысль, которую люди вырабатывают у себя о красоте, сама идея красоты изменяются в ходе истории вместе с философскими претензиями и просто с развитием человека в течение его собственной жизни. И это заставляет меня думать, что на самом деле красота есть символ чего-то другого. Но чего именно? Красота — символ правды. Я говорю не в смысле противоположности «правда и ложь», но в смысле истины пути, который человек выбирает.

'No one knows what beauty is. Thought, which people develope in themselves about the beauty, the idea of beauty itself change in course of history together with philosophical claims and simply with development of human being in current of his own life. And that makes me think that in deed beauty is the symbol of something else. But what exactly? Beauty - is the symbol of the true. I say not in sence of opposition of "true and lies", but in sence of truth of way, which man chooses.'

In the same interview Tarkovsky said that beauty in movie art should be harmonical and sacred, but not something just pretty.

Речь идет здесь не о красивости, не о чем-то красивеньком речь идет о гармоничной красоте, о красоте потаенной, о красоте как таковой.

And by this we can make something out. The Beauty is greatest goddess for visual arts and for any kind of art. But it is not beauty of external looks, but something not so evident. Something harmonizing all around or the harmony of the movie.
